Paul Breuer Not Your Granny’s Quilts Patterns surround us. They exist in all sorts of forms, from the natural geometric patterns on animal skins, insects, snowflakes, life cycles, the phases of the moon, the orbit of the planets around the sun, to behaviors, thought processes, to man made in textiles, buildings, wallpaper, art of all kinds from primitive tribal art to contemporary structures and facades. Patterns repeat conveying a sense of repetition and the idea of the whole being greater than the sum of its’ parts. The process of printmaking is very much dictated by patterns. The physical along with the visual repetition involved in running an edition, a series of identical prints from the same plate. Within this process I take liberties to alter the pattern in unexpected ways to enhance or degrade the image in ways to my liking, also known as a variable edition. Lately I’ve been processing old prints, cutting them up and reassembling them in a pattern for the purpose of overwhelming the viewer’s visual experience and challenge them to locate a variety of patterns within the final piece.
