Department: 2D
In this beginner drawing class, we will be covering how to draw what we see by understanding how to build from shapes while also measuring. We will mostly be doing still-lifes so we can learn how to render shadows and get various tones out of an object with just graphite. The basics of both one point and two-point perspective will be taught so we can create minor illustrations set to a fun prompt in order to flex our creativity. Along the way, we will also cover the basics of the figure. By the end of the course, I hope the artist in attendance can more comfortably draw things that they both see with their eyes, and in their head!

Art Exhibitions:
Rowen Schussheim-Anderson: Tapestries of Innovation
February 28 – April 11, 2025 Preston Jackson Gallery, 2nd Floor
While this Rock Island artist and educator employs centuries’ old techniques, her innovative use of fresh materials, organic structures and maps as design sources delights fans of weaving. Her influences include fiber work of Latin America and Africa and color field painters like Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman to inspire blending subtle transitions, despite surfaces built row by row on a 56” four-harness floor loom.
Capturing Light: Bennett Johnson and Jim Scheller
February 28 – April 4, 2025 Gallery 3R, 3rd Floor
Inspired by the designs of celebrated architects and painters, Peoria artist photographer Bennett Johnson is paired with Staunton glass artist Jim Scheller. They share a proclivity to focus on dynamic details of reflection and shadow that most might overlook. A former architect, Johnson captures a glimpse of structures we may pass by every day, in a mysterious interplay of color and pattern. Inspired by modern masters, Scheller emulates the designs of 20th Century painters so well they could have been created by the masters themselves.

Event Details
The Fine Arts Society of Peoria is offering a presentation by Dr. Nicole Myers.
The popular 19th century artists’ collective now known as the Impressionists was comprised of a long, constantly shifting roster of painters, sculptors, and engravers who exhibited together between 1874 and 1886. Most beloved and most frequently discussed may be Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Paul Cezanne. Of this vast membership, three of its most critically acclaimed and financially successful members were its sole female
practitioners: Berthe Morisot, Marie Bracquemond, and Mary Cassatt.
Dr. Nicole Myers will consider the vastly divergent careers and artistic production of these talented yet underrated, if not mostly unknown, artists within the Impressionist movement. As Chief Curator and Research Officer at the Dallas Museum of Art, Myers leads the Museum’s Curatorial, Conservation, and Library & Archives departments, in addition to overseeing the European art collection.

On Thursday, April 10th, 2025, the Peoria County Genealogical Society will hold its monthly member meeting at the Peoria Public Library North Branch to hear from Ken Zurski, local author & historian. Ken will take us through the past 13 years since his book “The Wreck of the Columbia” was released. Come hear about his award winning efforts and appearances on the national stage. Peoria history lovers should be thoroughly entertained! Ken will be joining us in person. Participants may join via Zoom or in person, as well.
From commemorations during the 100th year anniversary of the wreck, to a reader’s theater version of the book, to the filming of a WTVP documentary, Zurski chronicles this journey in stories and pictures that also features tales about his other books like “Peoria Stories” and the award-winning “Unremembered,” which led to segments on C-Span and most recently a trip to New York for an appearance on the History Channel.
Ken Zurski is a longtime broadcaster, author and speaker based out of Peoria, Illinois. A native of the Chicagoland area and a veteran of radio news, Ken released his first book, The Wreck of the Columbia, in 2012. Peoria Stories is his second book, Unremembered is his third, and Unremembered Book 2 is his fourth. Ken resides in Morton, Illinois with his wife Connie, two children, Sam and Nora, and dog Molly.
Free and open to the public. No registration is needed if attending in person.

About the Band:
Tambora creates poetic, energetic, Flamenco influenced music, sung in both Spanish and English. Cindy Youngren’s emotionally charged vocals top off the music, with Tom Hopwood’s intricate nylon string guitar work leading way, washing you into the rhythm of a street festival to dance uninhibited. Filling out the band is Matt Meismer-guitar and vocals, Jerry Hendricks-bass guitar, Chris Di Piazza-djemba and Jose Reyes-congas. The debut Tambora EP released in 2021 gained attention thanks to heavy airplay of the single ‘No Tengo Tiempo’ on WGLT in Central Illinois and WVIX out of Chicago. Hear some music at www.Tambora.band

On a cold, clear, moonless winter night in the mythical town of Almost, Maine—“almost” because it’s more than wilderness but not quite a town—the northern lights dance above as the residents navigate, falling in and out of love in surprising, often humorous ways. This play, presented by the Theatre program, explores love, longing, friendship, and isolation through nine charming and quirky vignettes capturing the fable-like magic and sweet simplicity of stories shared around a New England campfire.
Purchase tickets at ICC.edu/arts or the PAC Box Office between 8 am and 4 pm Monday – Friday.

Event Details
The Clean Water Celebration is held each spring at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria, Illinois. The largest event of its kind in the world, students learn how to make a difference by protecting water—our most precious resource. Illinois students, teachers, business professionals and environmentalists, are joined by an odd assortment of tiny tadpoles, wiggly worms, native bluegills, and zebra mussels. There’s nothing like it anywhere.
The Sun Foundation Clean Water Celebration is a truly unique event, a model developed in Peoria for the world. Since its inception in 1994 as a collaboration between the Rivers Project and Sun Foundation, it has reached an estimated 60,000 or more youth and adults.
The goal is to teach the importance of thinking globally and acting locally to protect the right to clean water and a healthy environment. Rich, rigorous, relevant STEM experiences increase knowledge in the community and schools about the importance of water conservation and preservation. The Sun Foundation Clean Water Celebration builds networks of awareness and action.
It is our dream that this program will grow to link school to school, community to community, state to state, and country to country, to take action and clean and protect our water and our environment.
Our celebration incorporates a variety of different programs for students and has grown each year to become a magical educational experience combining both the arts and sciences.
