“One by One”
Works by Knyame Maison One by One speaks to both the way these sculptures are made and the way I hope they are experienced. Each figure begins in wax and is shaped individually before being cast in bronze. No two are the same. Together they share a common form, yet each carries its own character. The work is rooted in the Ghanaian Akuaba, a symbol of hope, beauty, fertility, and blessing. Rather than repeating a traditional form, I use it as a point of departure to explore proportion, surface, rhythm, balance, and the possibilities of bronze. The casting process preserves the evidence of the hand while giving permanence to what was once soft and temporary. I invite viewers to spend time with each sculpture on its own, discovering how small shifts in form can create new meaning. One by one, the works become a conversation between tradition and personal expression.
