Event Details
Join the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, Maestro George Stelluto, aerial violinist, Janice Martin, and the Central Illinois Ballet, for its annual Romance concert at the Peoria Civic Center Theater on Saturday, February 18, 2023.
This year’s Romance concert has been designed in honor of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra’s 125th Season by our soloist, acrobatic violinist Janice Martin: romantic music from the Romantic Era! Ms. Martin opens with a virtuoso solo violin work by Ysaÿe and then joins the orchestra in a work by Tchaikovsky written for one of his romantic partners. Tchaikovsky’s famous Romeo and Juliet is his musical tribute to Shakespeare’s famous “star-crossed lovers.” In Scheherazade, Ms. Martin takes the role of a princess, whose inventive storytelling postpones her death, and eventually wins the heart of the stern sultan. After a brilliant, Spanish-flavored showpiece by Saint-Saëns, we close with excerpts from Stravinsky’s ballet The Firebird, based upon a Russian fairytale.
Ysaÿe: Violin Sonata in D minor, Op. 27, No. 3, Ballade
Tchaikovsky: Valse-Scherzo in C Major, Op. 34
Tchaikovsky: Overture-Fantasy Romeo and Juliet
Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade, Op. 35
Saint-Saëns: Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 28
Stravinsky: Suite from “The Firebird” (1919 version)

Nikki Malley Quintet
Deviating from the standard jazz quintet makeup, the Nikki Malley Quintet utilizes the unique timbres of vibraphone and trumpet to explore both traditional and modern jazz literature with particular focus on hard bop, ECM, and contemporary/popular styles. From lesser known works by jazz greats to creative arrangements drawing on genres outside the jazz tradition, Malley’s repertoire reflects a life-long artistic curiosity inspired by her dual roles as performer and musicologist. The quintet’s distinctive creative voice is brought to life in collaboration with trumpeter Edgar Crockett, pianist Derel Monteith, bassist Andy Crawford, and drummer Jason Brannon.
The ever-popular CIJS House Band under the leadership of Larry Harms kicks off the evening, featuring outstanding jazz musicians from the area. They present a variety of jazz standards and other popular arrangements. Always a delight!
Beverages are available for purchase.

Join the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, Maestro George Stelluto, Oto Carrillo, horn, and Christine Lamprea, cello, for the Sounds of Spring concert on Saturday, March 25 at Grace Presbyterian Church.
In the first half of this program, the Peoria Symphony Orchestra welcomes two fine soloists. Oto Carillo, horn, of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, opens the concert with Strauss’s Horn Concerto No. 1. This work, written when the composer was only 19 years old, was inspired by his father’s playing. The dynamic young Christine Lamprea, cello, then joins us for the Cello Concerto No. 1 by Saint-Saëns, one of the finest Romantic works for the cello. The program ends with a youthful work by Bizet, the Symphony in C.
Strauss: Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major
Saint Saëns: Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor
