This exhibition highlights new works by four members of the Peoria Guild of Black Artists and features some collaborative installations. Individually the works deal with divinity, familial and community connection, personal lore, queer culture, but the work’s content overlaps between the artists with personal histories, connections to youth, fantasy, pop culture, and play. This exhibition simultaneously celebrates the shared and varied influences on these artists’ practices, commemorates their personal histories and narratives, and offers a chance to play together.
Alongside the exhibition and also in the Heuser Gallery, will be a panel discussion titled “PGOBA, Intersectionality, and Diaspora: A Conversation” on Wednesday, September 13th at 5pm Central, followed by a reception from 6-8pm.
PANELIST’S:
Dr. Darius Bost is Associate Professor of Black Studies and Gender & Women’s Studies, and his research focuses in the areas of black literary and visual cultures; feminist, gender, and sexuality studies; African American and LGBTQ histories; and medical humanities
Dr. Hermann von Hesse is Assistant Professor of Art History at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champagne, And his research mainly focuses on the nexus between the material cultures of the African Atlantic world, the Black Diaspora and early modern European imperial and capitalist expansion and the contemporary legacies of these historical processes
Alexander Martin is an interdisciplinary artist alum of the Bradley University Art and Design Department Master of Fine Art program, and her work activates various aspects of Queer, Black, and Trans culture, her own personal history, and stories from within her communities.
As with all our exhibitions and lectures – FREE and open to the public. Closed for lunch from 12:00pm-1:30pm.
