Ragtime the Musical Comes to the Tent!

Corn Stock Theatre brings the award winning Broadway musical RAGTIME to the Tent

Considered one of the greatest musicals of all time, Corn Stock Theatre is creating an all new production of the award-winning musical Ragtime on stage every night from July 12th thru July 20th. This sweeping epic musical consists of a diversified cast of 70 of Peoria’s finest community artists and tells the story of three families in pursuit of the American Dream. Written by the award-winning composer/lyricist team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, Tony Award-winning playwright Terrence McNally, and based on E.L. Doctorow’s distinguished novel it is a 1998 Tony Award winning musical. At the dawn of a new century, everything is changing, and anything is possible. Set in the volatile melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York, three distinctly American tales are woven together: that of a passionate and daring young Harlem ragtime musician, a stifled and loyal upper-class wife, and a proud and determined Latvian immigrant. Many turn of the 20th century historical figures are featured in the production including Harry Houdini, Evelyn Nesbit, Booker T. Washington, J. P. Morgan, Henry Ford, Stanford White, Harry Kendall Thaw, Admiral Peary, Matthew Henson, and Emma Goldman. They are united by their courage, compassion, and belief in the promise of the future. Together they confront history’s timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America.

Director Pam Orear has put together a stellar cast led by Brandon Chandler as Coalhouse Walker, Dustin Presley as Tateh, Sarah Evans Mayo as Mother, Kiana Baylor as Sarah, Brock Taylor as Younger Brother, Dave Schick as Father, Ronnie Hudson II as Booker T. Washington, Leslie Foti as Emma Goldman, Anna Glavin as Evelyn Nesbit, and Simeon Abbey as Houdini. Andrea Molina is Music / Orchestra Director and Choreographer is Tamra Challacombe. Orear, reflecting on the story of Ragtime, shares that all the characters are pursuing their own individualized American dream while maneuvering through the particular hardships they were born into.

Although more than 100 years have passed since the time period of Ragtime, there are a striking number of similarities to issues we face today. Through this masterful and beautifully sung score, creatively executed choreography and visual staging, Ragtime continues to be fresh and relevant celebrating America’s past while inspiring the future.
