The blockbuster musical Disney’s Newsies will be exploding on the Corn Stock Theatre stage August 3 – 11. With music by Alan Menken and Lyrics by Jack Feldman from the book by Harvey Feirstein, this Tony Award-winning Broadway phenomenon is based on the historical newsboy strike of 1899. It tells the story of a charismatic newsboy Jack Kelly and his gang of Newsies who rally the citizens of New York City to protest their fight against publishing giants William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer who raised the price of papers by ten cents and refused to buy back any that were unsold. This was a massive hardship on the poor and orphaned youth that made up the child labor of news boys and girls. From newsboys and girls to activists, the musical dramatizes the David-versus-Goliath fight for what is right. This strike would eventually lead to the introduction of urban child-welfare practices.

Corn Stock Theatre’s production immerses the audience right in the center of the action. Being performed in the three quarter round with a cast of over 100, Corn Stock’s Newsies brings this story to life with a soul stirring award winning score, high energy and electrifying dance, and a story with a lot of heart. Newsies is directed by Pam Orear, choreography by Tamra Challacombe, and Music Direction by Holly Haines. The cast consist of Caleb Johnson as Jack Kelly, Alex Hunt as Crutchie, Nicole Barth as Katherine, Aaron Elwell as Davey, Edward Couri as Les, Ed Peck as Joseph Pulitzer, Jamika Welch as Medda Larkin, Clark Abraham as Wiesel, Dan Challacombe as Mr. Jacobi, and Lead Newsies Thomas Deters, Bobby Haley, Zack Johnson, Ryan Foulk, Natalie McMillion, Brianna Cross, Cole Rich, Jaret Ledford, Sophie Challacombe, Andrew McCurdy, Aidan Khoury, Sydney Abnour, Selah Schertz, and Nick Hittle.

There are many touching and inspirational sub-stories in the production of Newsies from unconditional friendships, a developing love story, the desire to flee one’s home for a better life, and the struggles of being a homeless youth. Newsies is packed with non-stop thrills, a timeless message, and spectacular production numbers perfect for the whole family and every audience. To make the evening complete, audiences are invited to come to the theatre early when Haddad’s Restaurant will be on hand with gyros, grilled chicken sandwiches, chicken wraps, porch chops, hamburgers, jumbo all-beef hot dogs, chips and lemon shake-ups starting at 5:30 p.m. every night.
