Open Call: “Hi, Have We Met?”

Deadline: 10/31/2025

Hi, Have We Met? is a new independent print publication that highlights the work of artists, art historians, and arts administrators living in or originally from the broader Midwest (not including large cities with more robust art scenes like Chicago; i.e. emphasis on rural regions).

The work featured in this publication will bring artists from underrepresented regions together in conversation, celebrate arts organizations and artist-run programs doing relevant work in their communities, and ultimately aims to create an open dialogue on what it means/looks like to forge a career in the arts when you’re from/live in what wouldn’t be considered an “art-hub” in the Midwest or wouldn’t pop up on most lists of “Art Cities in America.”

Proposal/Submission Information:

For submissions, we are looking for pieces (finished or first drafts) either about being an artist from the “Heartland” and how that has impacted your artistic journey or pieces related to your overarching art practice. Open to hearing pitches outside of those two concepts as well, but that is the general direction for this publication.

  • Mediums: Artist-on-artist interviews (or art historian-on-artist interviews), short essays, comics, and visual artwork.
  • Who: Artists, art historians, and arts administrators who either grew up in or currently work in the Midwest (not including cities with robust art scenes like Chicago; i.e. emphasis on rural regions). If you are originally from these areas, iit is not necessary that you still live there to be included in this publication! If you’re unsure if this is you, submit anyways or send an email/dm!
  • Contributors will receive a copy of the final printed publication, but should be made by you (an artist from/making work in the broader midwest).
