The classic musical comedy of the 1950’s, Guys and Dolls, opens on Friday, November 12 at Peoria Players Theatre. According to director, Mary Ellen Ulrich, “This production is welcoming people back to theatre with a show that you simply sit back and enjoy. These songs people are very familiar with, and laugh at the antics of the gamblers. You will leave the theater singing a ‘Bushel and a Peck,’ ‘Sit Down, Sit Down’ or ‘Luck Be A Lady’ — songs that literally step you back to a simpler time in America.”
The show opened in 1950 and was known as a perfect musical comedy. The show is set in Times-Square with some big city gamblers and the women who love them. There are two stories going at the same time. The first is the story of a high-roller Sky Masterson, played by Todd Michael Cook, and the mission worker, Sarah Brown, played by Kaselyn Gibbs, who fall in love — a gambler and a mission doll, will love win? The other love interest is between the loveable rapscallion Nathan Detroit, played by Nate Downs, and the Hot Box Dancer, Ms. Adelaide, played by Katie McLuckie. Nathan is continually running a floating crap game, but Ms. Adelaide is determined after 14 years of dating she will win over the games! Added to this are more veterans on our stage such as Nicely-Nicely Johnson (Roger Roemer), leading a spirited rendition of “Sit Down You’re Rockin the Boat,” and familiar entertainers such as Seth Katz and Joe Couri opening the show as Tinhorns. In another scene, Robin Hunt never ceases to amaze with her dancing skills as a Hot Box Dancer. You will keep seeing those familiar, talented people you know in every scene!
Guys and Dolls is a community show that prides itself on welcoming newcomers to our stage. Peoria Players is thrilled to feature these newcomers, including David Beraru as Arvide Abernathy, Curt DeBacker as Big Jule, Gabrielle Smith as Diva, and David Hunt as Lt. Brannigan. We are also proud to introduce these newcomers to our various ensemble roles, as well, including Mick Davis, Pat Davis, Kathy Eroh, Hannah Harper, Mary Jane Hutson, Gabi Juarez, Suzy Lewellan, Michelle Rosencrans and Polly Wagner.
The 39 members of the Guys and Dolls cast are ready to entertain Peoria and anxious to hear applause and laughter again as you come out to enjoy and support your local community theatre. The show is choreographed by Aliesha Graves, with musical direction by Amanda Bach, and direction by Mary Ellen Ulrich. Performances include Nov 12-13 and 17-20 at 7:30 pm, and November 14 and 21 at 2:00 pm.
