“Urban Abstract” featuring Gary Beaumont and Kent Broadbent
Opening reception on First Friday at the Peoria Art Guild
February 7, 2020, from 5-9 PM
Exhibit ends February 28,2020
The February exhibition at the Peoria Art Guild is, a collection of works by Illinois artists, Gary Beaumont and Kent Broadbent. “Urban Abstract” consists of canvases and clay works existing as inspirations having physical or concrete existence infused with color and light that both artists use to intrigue the passerby.
Kent Broadbent’s work is abstract, vibrant, colorful. Through texture he creates lines and shapes that offer a unique weaving across his canvases that engage the viewer. Strong rectangular shapes bring the subject into an urban experience of briskly passing buildings and corporate structures. Populated by stripes, dots, grids, and an array of free-floating forms, his light-filled canvases are sensuous, playful, and visually complex. His development of applying paint causes a cool and contemplative approach toward a more intricate style.
Gary Beaumonts clayworks originate from earth itself, fired and presented with a strong colorful presence. His tile series include several various glaze applications resulting in striking abstract visuals. “Four Squared 7” is a tile work with an ochre background and an earthy texture with organic edges and a floating celedon square. “Four Squared Blue and Crater 2” features four tiles butted together with a center square depicting an excavated surface. Rich and infused with light, the works demonstrate Beaumont’s skill at using the glazes much like Broadbent uses paint on canvas.
