Join the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, Maestro George Stelluto, aerial violinist, Janice Martin, and the Central Illinois Ballet, for its annual Romance concert at the Peoria Civic Center Theater on Saturday, February 18, 2023.
This year’s Romance concert has been designed in honor of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra’s 125th Season by our soloist, acrobatic violinist Janice Martin: romantic music from the Romantic Era! Ms. Martin opens with a virtuoso solo violin work by Ysaÿe and then joins the orchestra in a work by Tchaikovsky written for one of his romantic partners. Tchaikovsky’s famous Romeo and Juliet is his musical tribute to Shakespeare’s famous “star-crossed lovers.” In Scheherazade, Ms. Martin takes the role of a princess, whose inventive storytelling postpones her death, and eventually wins the heart of the stern sultan. After a brilliant, Spanish-flavored showpiece by Saint-Saëns, we close with excerpts from Stravinsky’s ballet The Firebird, based upon a Russian fairytale.
Ysaÿe: Violin Sonata in D minor, Op. 27, No. 3, Ballade
Tchaikovsky: Valse-Scherzo in C Major, Op. 34
Tchaikovsky: Overture-Fantasy Romeo and Juliet
Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade, Op. 35
Saint-Saëns: Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 28
Stravinsky: Suite from “The Firebird” (1919 version)
