The Peoria Players 2021-2022 season is as follows:
Little Women
Director: Peggy Breaux Hupp
September 10-19, 2021
Description: Louisa May Alcott’s beloved story of the adventures of the four March sisters is brought to vivid musical life in Little Women. The Civil War is in full swing, and the March sisters — Meg, the oldest, a romantic, the spirited and tomboyish Jo, sweet and loving Beth, and irascible, playful Amy — live in Concord, Massachusetts with their Marmee while their father is on the battlefield. Filled with adventure (both lived and imagined), heartbreak, and a deep sense of hope, the struggle of these “Little Women” to find their own voices mirrors the growing pains of a young America. With buoyant, joyful melodies, memorable characters, and a big-hearted message, Little Women reminds us that “sometimes when you dream, your dreams come true.”
The Shawshank Redemption
Director: Amy DeTrempe-Williams
October 8-17, 2021
Description: Adapted from the Stephen King short novel, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, this is the story of Andy Dufresne, a banker who spends 19 years in Shawshank State Prison for the murder of his wife and her lover despite his claims of innocence. During his time at the prison, he befriends a fellow inmate, Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding, and finds himself protected by the guards after the warden begins using him in his money laundering operation. The story inspired the 1994 film, The Shawshank Redemption. In 2015, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.
*Contains adult content and language.
Guys and Dolls
Director: Mary Ellen Ulrich
November 12-21, 2021
Description: This musical romantic comedy with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, involves the unlikeliest of Manhattan pairings: a high-rolling gambler and a puritanical missionary, a showgirl dreaming of the straight-and-narrow and a crap game manager who is anything but. Set in Depression-era Times Square, Guys and Dolls is about a couple of big city gamblers and the women who love them. The show premiered on Broadway in 1950, where it ran for 1,200 performances and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical has had several Broadway and London revivals, as well as a 1955 film adaptation starring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine.
The SpongeBob Musical
Director: Travis Olson
February 4-13, 2022
Description: The stakes are higher than ever in this dynamic stage musical, as SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom face the total annihilation of their undersea world. Chaos erupts…And just when all hope seems lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage. Co-conceived and directed by Tina Landau with songs by various artists and a book by Kyle Jarrow, this musical opened to critical acclaim with twelve Tony Award nominations.
Sweet Charity
Director: Chip Joyce
March 25-April 3, 2022
Description: With music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and book by Neil Simon, Sweet Charity is a tender, poignant and consistently funny look at the adventures, or rather, misadventures in the ways of love encountered by the gullible and guiless lady known as Charity Agnes Valentine – “the lady of the evening” who always gives her heart, and her earnings, to the wrong man. “Hey Big Spender,” “If My Friends Could See Me Now” and “There’s Gotta Be Something Better Than This” are just some of the well-known songs from this classic.
Mamma Mia!
Director: Jimmy Ulrich
May 13-22, 2022
Description: After breaking box office records at Peoria Players in 2018, Mamma Mia! returns to thrill audiences once again. This delightful show is based on the songs of ABBA, composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, former members of the band, and tells the story of Sophie, her three potential dads, and a memorable walk down the aisle! Over 60 million people worldwide have fallen in love with the characters, the story and the music that make Mamma Mia! the ultimate feel-good show!
