Event Details

Bill Evans may be most famous for being the primary pianist on the Kind of Blue album by Miles Davis, but many believe Evans made his greatest contributions in the 2 years after Kind of Blue, when he collaborated with Scott LaFaro (bass) and Paul Motian (drums) to develop an innovative, interactive style of piano trio playing. That trio’s work culminated in live recordings created at the Village Vanguard on June 25, 1961 and released as the Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby albums, both of which are commonly listed among the best live jazz albums of all time. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of those recordings, the Central Illinois Jazz Society presents an evening devoted to the music of Bill Evans. A set of Evans compositions performed by a quintet will be followed by a piano trio performance of pieces from the Evans trio’s 1961 Village Vanguard recordings. The ensembles will consist of Chuck MacKinnon on trumpet, George Turner on guitar, Derel Monteith on piano, Andy Crawford on bass, and Jason Brannon on drums.
