Back by popular demand, Broadway Backwards 2 returns to Peoria Players Memorial Day weekend! Last year, Director Bryan Blanks and some well-known community theatre performers joined forces to bring this musical revue to life on the Peoria Players stage. The show featured popular musical theatre songs, but performed “backwards.” Last year’s fundraiser production allowed for performers to take on roles regardless of race, age, gender, and type. Audiences quickly fell in love with this concept, and the show was such a success last year that Peoria Players will be presenting Broadway Backwards 2 May 25-27. This year’s production features many of the same talented singers and dancers from last spring, including members of the Peoria Area Performing Arts Studio. The show will feature new “backwards” selections from Frozen, Phantom of the Opera, Singin’ in the Rain, Company, Hamilton and many more.
Although most of the songs and dances from Broadway Backwards 2 are new this year, Blanks included a few of last year’s most memorable production numbers. The show also features many cast members who were seen in the most recent smash hit production of Mamma Mia!, including Dedra Kaiser who played the lead role of Donna. Peoria Theatre veteran Michael Hurt will also be joining the cast singing the closing number of Act 2, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
Blanks stated, “I could not believe the response to last year’s production. Audiences were begging for us to do the show again and performers were more than eager to be on stage for round 2. Each person in Broadway Backwards 2 is either someone I’ve performed with countless times or is a performer I’ve admired from behind the scenes. The cast is then rounded out with kids that I’ve worked with to help pass on the passion of musical theatre. Moments of this year’s spring fundraiser will be heartfelt, comical, ridiculous and yes — Backwards….Very Backwards!”
