Peoria Public Library Lincoln Branch will host a Juneteenth Celebration on Tuesday, June 19th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. to celebrate the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth began in Galveston, Texas in 1865 when on June 19th, slaves finally received word that they had been emancipated and Peoria Public Library Lincoln Branch will join in the nationwide celebration with an event for all ages that includes poetry, drama, singing and “finger-snapping.” Juneteenth is the oldest know celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States and has been an African American tradition since the late 19th century.
